Directions  From Wailuku, drive north on Hwy 33/330 for 2.3 miles. Turn left onto Hwy 340 for 5.2 miles to the bridge over Makamaka'ole Stream. Continue for 0.3 miles to a turnout on the right side of the road and park. There is a turnout and trail about 0.1 miles past the bridge, which leads down to the stream. If you go left (downstream) when you reach the creek, it will take you to the brink of a 15-20 ft. waterfall above Lower Makamaka'ole Falls. If you go too far, you will be on "the mini road to Hana." This is either good or bad depending on your driving abilities. Keep in mind that the road becomes nearly one way and is on a cliff with many turns.

Notes  This hike is short, but very steep and slippery. Make sure that you wear good grippy shoes, bring bug spray if you wish, and it is not a bad idea to have some sort of first aid kit just in case. To get to the end of the hike, you will want to climb down the roots of an old giant banyan tree. It is much like a ladder and very sturdy. Be careful on the smooth flat rocks down below. Despite the warnings, this is a fun easy hike. Go at your own pace, and you will be safe.
