Directions The parking lot we're meeting at is just inside the North entrance of Franklin Canyon.
The parking lot is labeled for WODOC, the William O. Douglas Outdoor Center. To complicate things further, it's also labeled for the Sooky Goldman Nature Center. To complicate things further, they label about ten other things the same, alternating between Sooky Goldman and Sam Goldman.
It is best to approach this parking lot, and Franklin Canyon Dr., from the North. Take Coldwater Canyon Blvd to Mulholland. Where Coldwater Canyon Blvd meets Mulholland, it's a big tweaked intersection. You enter Franklin Canyon Dr from this intersection --- it goes straight west, basically perpendicular to Mulholland Dr. The parking lot is easy to find from here. You'll drop about 0.6 miles from Mulholland and it will be a huge dirt lot to your left, just after you enter the WODOC passing a large wooden sign for Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy. |

The Good Very pretty, quiet, lots of wildlife. |
|
The Bad Not much of a hike, more of a long walk. But great for first timers. |
|
Where Top of the hill just south of Coldwater and Ventura Blvd. |
|
Notes Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, just south of Coldwater and Ventura Blvd is a refuge for wildlife and people known as Franklin Canyon. It is an island of open space surrounded by the city. Picnic under sycamore trees or hike along chaparral covered slopes that protect the stunning reservoir.
Watch for ground squirrels scurrying around their holes or red-tail hawks soaring overhead. Ducks and turtles dot the water and surrounding plants.
