Special instructions   Methuselah Foundation's anti-aging conference (being held at UCLA) will be breaking for lunch at 12:30p. Lower Franklin Canyon is close to UCLA. It might be a good time to catch up with any friends attending the conference!

Directions
From West Los Angeles, head north on Beverly Drive following signs to Coldwater Canyon. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly Drive, and turn left again on Beverly Drive, at Fire Station No. 2. The third right is Franklin Canyon Drive. Continue through the residential area to park entrance. At the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive turn right to go to Franklin Canyon Ranch site and lower parking lot. (Turning left brings you to the Sooky Goldman Nature Center and Franklin Canyon Lake.)

From the San Fernando Valley, take the Ventura Freeway (101) or Ventura Boulevard to Coldwater Canyon Boulevard.

Head south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Drive. Road signs read "Road Closed 800 Feet" "Sunset to Sunrise"; this is the park entrance. Do NOT make a U-turn as this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay on paved surface to reach the Sooky Goldman Nature Center. Continue south of the lake for 1.5 miles to reach the Franklin Canyon Ranch site area and parking lot.

Please meet in the parking lot nearest Lower Franklin Reservoir (please see the following map: http://goo.gl/9F7eO

The Good

-- Dogs are welcome, but must be on leash and are not allowed to swim in any bodies of water.
-- Parking is free!
-- Restroom at the parking lot

The Bad

This park closes at Sunset.

Where  Franklin Canyon, Beverly Hills, CA

Notes
The Hastain Trail loop is a mere 3 miles long, but the hike can be extended by proceeding up the Hastain Trail toward Coldwater Canyon Dr. This branch in the trail is at the top of the steep section of the loop.

The trail has both wide and narrow stretches, and a section of the loop has a much more steep incline. So it is up to the group to choose how much we want to sweat.

Regardless of our direction the view is fantastic.

"This hike is worth every drop of sweat because of the panoramic-view reward. The trail passes an amphitheater and has a choice of several make-out, er, lookout points. There are several picnic areas, a duck pond and a three-acre lake that begs the breathless to take a break." - Mai Dinh (http://www.la.com/recreation/Franklin_Canyon_Park.html)
