Special instructions   This hike will be at night, with a lovely and somewhat full moon overhead. Bring a light (flashlight, glow stick, rave light, etc.), a jacket, and moon screen.

From the Nike Station we will have a fantabulous panoramic view of the valley and the west side. Other things we might see include pretty lights, coyotes, and owls.

Directions  At the top of the Supulveda Pass on the 405 Freeway, exit Mulholland.
Head north-west on Mulholland for 2 miles until it becomes the well lit residential area of Encino Hills Dr. Continue past the next intersection and park.

Where  Mulholland Drive

Notes  From the parking location, we will walk back out of the residential area to Mulholland and continue up the dirt road. It is just over a mile to the Nike Station, but we can certainly extend the hike as far as we like.

During the Cold War the U.S. military constructed 16 Nike Missile sites around the Los Angeles area. The first one was operational in 1950 and the last one was decommissioned in 1974. Today little remains of this interesting part of L.A. defense history, but we can still climb all over it.

The hike is a short walk up to Mulholland Drive where we can enjoy a fabulous view of the Encino Reservoir and the valley. Hiking east will bring us to this cold war relic. In this area Mulholland Drive is little more than a fire road.

This trail is dog friendly, but be sure to bring a leash.
