Notes A hidden redwood forest lies off Redwood Road just a few miles over the ridge from downtown Oakland, offering many crisscrossing trails of varied difficulty levels.
The forest's peaceful groves give little evidence of the park's extensive logging in the mid-1800s. In addition to a great forest of coast redwoods, the park's 1,830 acres also contain other evergreens, chaparral, and grasslands.
The hike will start at the Chabot Center parking lot, heading SE through the Redwood Bowl and continuing down the West Ridge trail. About a mile from the parking lot, take the Chown trail to the left, descending down the back side of the ridge.
Take the French Trail part way down the ridge (to the right) for a somewhat shorter loop. (Or continue down the Chown trail to the Stream trail (fire road) if you feel up to the long climb back up. Turn right on the Stream Trail for 0.36 miles, and take the Mill Trail back up the ridge. Rejoin the French Trail to the right, after a hard climb of 0.18 miles.)
Continue along the French Trail for 1.54 miles, and turn left onto the Madrone Trail back up the ridge. The Madrone Trail can be an arduous climb back to the West Ridge Trail.
Take a right on the West Ridge Trail to return to the Redwood Bowl and parking structure.
